Before participating in an auction, please be sure to read the following.


To purchase or consign an item by auction, you must register first. Please complete the necessary information on the prescribed application form and submit it in advance with the fee for the catalogue. You may also apply at the pre-auction viewing or at the reception on the day of the auction. Auction catalogues, which contain all the pieces up for auction in order of lot number, are issued for each auction.

Prior to each auction, a pre-auction viewing is held where all the properties up for auction are available for your inspection. A sale cannot be cancelled once a property has been knocked down, do please be sure to check the condition of the piece for yourself in advance. If you have questions or want advice about an item, please feel free to ask one of our staff members at the pre-auction viewing.

Mallet Auctions are conducted using the bidding-up system. You can participate either (1) by paddle display, (2) by telephone bidding, or (3) by absentee bidding in written form.

(1) Paddle display
On the day of the auction, please sign the prescribed form and pick up a paddle at the reception. The auctioneer will describe each property in the order that it appears in the catalogue. and then open bidding. If you wish to place a bid for the property, please raise your paddle to indicate your intent.

(2) Telephone bidding
Please fill out the required information on the Absentee Bids form to be found at the back of the catalogue. and mail or fax it to Mallet Japan. The form must reach us by no later than the day before the auction. As the number of available phone lines is limited, bids will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis.

(3) Absentee bidding in written form
Please fill out the required information on the Absentee Bids form to be found at the back of the catalogue, and mail or fax it to Mallet Japan. The form must reach us by no later than the day before the auction. On the day of the auction a Mallet Japan representative will bid on your behalf up to the maximum amount that you have indicated on the form.

Bid prices and hammer prices do not include fees and charges. If a property is knocked down to you, you will be separately charged the following Buyer's Premium on a per lot basis.

If the Hammer Price is 1,000,000 Yen or less:
15.75% of the Hammer Price (including consumption tax)

If the Hammer Price exceeds 1,000,000 Yen:
15.75% of the Hammer Price (including consumption tax) up to and including 1,000,000 Yen, plus 10.50% of any amount exceeding 1,000,000 Yen (including consumption tax)

Please make payment in Japanese Yen within ten days of the date of the auction. Payment is accepted in cash, by bank cashier's check, or by bank remittance to the following account:

The purchased property is handed over upon confirmation of receipt of payment. If you are present at the auction and wish to have the property shipped or to pick it up, please fill out the necessary information on the Shipping Instructions Form and hand it over to one of our staff members at the reception desk when you leave. If you are bidding in writing or by phone, please indicate your requests on the Absentee Bids form. If no instructions are provided, all items will be shipped to you. You will be charged for packaging and shipping upon delivery.

Please note that once a property has been knocked down, no cancellations whatsoever will be accepted.
